I received the following question:

In 2 Kings 8:11, what is this moment? He gazes at him until he’s ashamed? Is God giving Elisha a vision right then and there of the things Hazael will do?

I believe that Hazael came on this mission for his lord knowing very well that he was planning to assassinate him when he got back. Elisha’s words were not what suggested to him this idea. He was carrying out this mission like a loyal and caring servant, but Elisha knows the treachery that is in his heart. His words, as well as his long and significant look, tell Hazael that his secret cannot be hidden from the prophet of the LORD. Hazael is ashamed when he realizes that the prophet knows exactly what is in his heart.
