Absalom’s son is not the one who died here, so it makes sense to supply the ellipsis with “David.” He was the one whose son had died, so he must be the one who mourned for his son Amnon every day. David had a very sensitive heart, and loved each one of his children, though some of them like Amnon were not good men.
